Make Your Skin Look Radiant with Dermaplaning

If you’re up to date on the latest cosmetic trends, then you’ve probably heard all about dermaplaning. Plenty of people have raved about his modern skincare technique. Here’s how you can use this miracle dermatology procedure to work for you.

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an in-office procedure that utilizes a surgical-grade scalpel to exfoliate and scrape the top layer of the skin (also known as the epidermis) of the face. In doing so, dead skin cells, black and whiteheads, and other blemishes are scraped away. The scraping motion also exfoliates the skin, promoting cell turnover thus rejuvenating it and creating a youthful look.

Dermaplaning is also used as a hair-removal solution. When done properly by a licensed aesthetician, dermaplaning scrapes away vellus hair, more popularly known as peach fuzz. Many women use dermaplaning as a way to prep the face for the application of makeup before a big event like a wedding or prom.

What Can You Expect?

Assuming you’ve already had a consultation and are ready for your dermaplaning session, you can expect the following to occur during treatment:

Step 1: Application of Cleanser

Before the aesthetician can begin “shaving” the face, he or she will apply a special cleanser to safely clean the skin removing germs, dirt, and bacteria from the surface.

Step 2: Shaving the Face

Using a quick, feathery motion, the aesthetician will begin scraping away the top layer of skin. Very light pressure is applied as the aesthetician stretches the skin with two fingers, creating a smooth, flat surface, and scraping continually in a downward motion. They may start at the top of the forehead and work their way down to the cheeks and chin.

Step 3: Application of Skincare Solution and Moisturizer

Once the scraping has ceased, the face may be slightly irritated and red. To minimize the chances of redness and irritation, the dermatologist will apply a skincare solution as well as a moisturizer to protect your skin from the elements while rehydrating it. The procedure is over in about 30 – 40 minutes and there is no downtime.

What Are The Results?

After the quick procedure, patients typically experience results right away. The skin appears smoother, lighter, and overall brighter. The skin will also be hairless with no peach fuzz and no blemishes. With the top layer removed, the skin will also regenerate, creating fresh new skin cells that are untouched and flawless. This growth of new cells will make acne scars and other scarring virtually disappear.

Beyond the immediate results, dermaplaning creates a clean new canvas for a more effective skincare routine as well as makeup application. Without the caked on dirt and grime, your fresh skin will have a smoother surface for foundation and allow skin care solutions to penetrate more deeply, giving you better results.
