Safe Cosmetic Procedures to Remove Double Chin

The dreaded double chin. You can cover up with scarves or turtlenecks, but when summer rolls around, you’ve no choice but to bare it all. You don’t have to hide anymore. Believe it or not, there are safe and reliable ways to cosmetically get rid of that double chin.

What is a Double Chin?

Scientifically speaking, a double chin is actually called submental fat. The submental space is the region between the face and neck – just under the chin and above the middle of the neck. The extra fat within that region is what we call a double chin. Most people believe that a double chin is brought on by weight gain or when an individual is overweight. While this may be the case for some, others who are not overweight can still have a double chin. It can be a result of genetics or even loose skin due to aging.

Cosmetic Treatment for Double Chins

1) Liposculpture

No, this isn’t liposuction, in which fat cells are “vacuumed” out of the desired rea. Liposculpture is a more precise procedure. Removing fat and possibly relocating it, liposculpture reshapes the chin to a more desirable look. This procedure is mostly performed on those who were overweight and lost enough for surgery, and those who genetically have a double chin. This procedure is not recommended for individuals who have loose skin as a result of aging.

2) Submentoplasty

If you’ll recall, the space where the double chin resides is called the submental space. The root word “-plasty” means “molding or forming surgically.” Put two and two together and you get “the surgical molding or forming of the space where the double chin resides.” In submentoplasty, a surgeon will make small incisions in the fatty areas and use liposuction to remove fat, thus tightening the skin and muscles.

3) Mesotherapy (Kybella)

Kybella has become an extremely popular method for getting rid of a double chin. Mesotherapy is the procedure in which a drug consisting of fat-dissolving substances is injected into the chin/neck region. Deoxycholic acid, known as Kybella, is the drug used in the procedure and is injected at least 20 times during the course of a single treatment. Generally speaking, an individual can have up to 6 treatments, one month in between. The results of Kybella can usually be seen in about 4 to 6 weeks. What makes it such a popular choice is the simple fact that once the deoxycholic acid destroys the fat cells, they can no longer store new cells in that area. Once you’ve completed treatment, you’re set for life.

Other Treatments

1) Firming Creams

Many people use firming creams as part of their morning rituals. These medicated creams can give the appearance of tighter skin. Unfortunately, these creams are very temporary and may last for only a few hours. Thus, they require multiple applications throughout the day. Be wary, however. Too much of these creams can result in the thinning of the skin or over time have less of an effect.

2) Chin Exercises

For those who have a double chin due to weight, you may be able to do several exercises multiple times a day to slim down the fat. Check out this article to read up on exercises that may work for you.

3) Healthy Eating and Exercise

Whether you target the double chin specifically or not, it won’t really matter if you don’t begin to take care of your entire body. Revamping your diet and introducing exercise to your daily routine can help with the weight loss. You may even notice the double chin start to disappear on its own.
