What Products Should Everyone Have in Their Skincare Routine?

Having flawless skin is usually high up on most people’s wish list. It can often seem like such a thing is impossible, but it’s not! On the contrary, having great skin is simply a matter of maintaining a healthy skincare routine. However, just like everything else in life, a good routine requires a great set of tools. We’re going to give you the best kind of tools (aka products) everyone should have in their skincare routine. So grab a pen and a sticky note and let’s dive in.

Most Important Skin Care Products

1. Moisturizer

No matter what you do with your skin, even if you follow every piece of advice ever given to you by a dermatologist, if you do not moisturize, it’s all for nothing. Truly! Moisturizing is one of the easiest things you can do to keep your skin healthy and looking marvelous. You MUST have a moisturizer in your skincare routine, and you should use it multiple times a day. Took a shower? Moisturize! About to go outside? Moisturize! Weather getting cold? Moisturize! Went for a swim? Moisturize!

Choosing a moisturizer is just as important as remembering to put it on. The wrong moisturizer can be a waste of money if it doesn’t work to keep your skin hydrated, or worse, it can lead to acne. The type of moisturizer you choose should be based on your skin type. If you have oily skin, go with a water-based lotion or serum. If you have dry skin, try something that’s thick and has natural ingredients.

To know exactly what type of moisturizer works for you, speak with your dermatologist.

2. “Safe” Soap

Let’s say you have your perfect moisturizer picked out. Great! Now you need to take a look at the type of soap you are using. Many people may be unaware of the effect their soap has on their skin. Certain soaps that contain alcohol, sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens, fragrance, and other chemicals can easily strip your skin of all of its natural oils.

Of course, this means that your moisturizer now has to work double time to repair the damage to your skin. How about, instead of repairing, you focus on preventing? Be very particular about the soap you choose. Read the ingredients, and don’t be afraid to leave popular brand name soaps on the shelf.

3. Sunscreen

Sure, we said moisturizer is a must, but the one skin care product that is more important is sunscreen. We are not exaggerating when we say sunscreen is a matter of life and death. Why? Because when you don’t wear sunscreen every time you step outside, you put yourself at risk of developing skin cancer.

No matter how simple your skincare routine may be, it must always include a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

4. “Safe” Makeup

The wrong type of makeup can be detrimental to your skin’s health. Just like soap, you want to make sure that the ingredients in your makeup are not harsh. Do your research on the brand and see where they get their ingredients from. What kind of testing do they do? You also want to make sure that you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients.

5. Oatmeal Bath Treatment

This may not be a “must have,” but anyone who loves the feel of baby-soft skin should definitely have an oatmeal bath treatment in their cabinet. This is especially important if you suffer from skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

6. *BONUS* Your Dermatologist’s Phone Number

Nothing gets your skin right better than a dermatologist. They’ll be able to help you identify your skin type and offer you the best products that complement your skin.
